OUR MOTHER
Our Mother is a short performance film that brings together dance, poetry, and cinematography in a meditative visual poem addressed to the Earth. The work reflects on our deep connection to the environments that sustain us, asking what it means to care for the places we inhabit and how we can rebuild relationships grounded in belonging, gratitude, and responsibility.
A collaboration between House of Wondar and Koleka Putuma, Our Mother was developed as a prequel to PEPONI, exploring themes of paradise, belonging, and our relationship with the natural world. The choreography and poetry were developed collaboratively with the performers, drawing on their personal reflections about what they would say to the Earth if they could speak to it directly.
Filmed along the coastal landscapes of Bagamoyo, Tanzania, the film draws inspiration from the region’s mangrove forests, shoreline, and the Indian Ocean. The natural environment becomes more than a backdrop it becomes a witness and a central presence within the work.
Through movement, poetry, and sound, Our Mother becomes a gentle meditation on care, resilience, and collective responsibility, offering an invitation to imagine a future where caring for the Earth becomes an act of collective healing.
About the Project
Our Mother emerged from a collaborative creative process in which the performers were invited to reflect on their relationship with the Earth and their surrounding environments. Their responses shaped both the poetic text and the movement vocabulary, resulting in gestures inspired by care, empowerment, and resilience.
The work unfolds like a visual prayer or ritual, drawing on the wind, water, shoreline, and memory of the ocean. Through this combination of dance and poetry, the film creates a space for reflection on environmental responsibility and our interconnectedness with the natural world.
