Matthieu Nieto is a choreographer, performer and teacher. He holds a Master’s degree in Performing Arts and a Bachelor’s degree in Dance from the University of Paris 8 in Saint-Denis. He trained in dance in various internationally renowned schools: Donko Seko in Bamako, the RIDC in Paris, Coline in Istres, the École des Sables in Senegal, and Dance New Amsterdam in New York. He then continued to explore different cultures and practices such as yoga, voguing and krump.
He has created several choreographic pieces and dance films and leads various community creation processes. In 2012/2013, he choreographed his first solo I am not my Color , created at the College of the Arts (Windhoek, Namibia) and Dance New Amsterdam (New York, USA). The piece, which explores racial representations and cultural fluidity, was then presented at the Open Studio Festival/Chez Bushwick (New York, USA); Detours Festival/Wits Theatre (Johannesburg, South Africa); East African Nights of Tolerance (Kigali, Rwanda) and Donko-Seko (Bamako, Mali). In 2017, he created a performative stroll in the streets of Fort-de-France with amateur dancers as part of a residency at the Un Oeuf artist house. He works in schools and nursing homes for choreographic workshops in Ariège.
In 2018, his second solo, I came here to talk was presented at the Jerk Off Festival/Point-Ephémère (75); the Bazis (09) and Bakelit Multi Art Center and Central European University (Budapest, Hungary). In 2021, he was invited by Wesley Ruzibiza, artistic director of Amizero Dance Kompanie, to choreograph a piece with four young dancers: Boy Band . In 2022, he worked as a teacher and choreographer with Muda Africa in Tanzania and co-created the piece Human/Forest , with Sanna Yrjänheikki and the 14 students of the training, presented at the Alliance Française in Dar Es Salaam. The same year, he collaborated with the choreographer Thamsanqa Majela on the duo POP presented in particular at the National Arts Festival, the Vrystaat Arts Festival in South Africa and the Ring-Scène Périphérique in Toulouse.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”48px”]
